Over the last six months campaigners lobbied Councillors and Council officials to exclude Veolia from the contract and submitted a letter to the WLWA – signed by nearly 600 local residents – documenting Veolia’s direct complicity in grave breaches of international and humanitarian law in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Campaigners pointed out that:
Veolia helped build and is involved in operating a tram-line which links Jerusalem with illegal Israeli settlements in the Palestinian West Bank.
Veolia takes waste from Israel and illegal Israeli Settlements and dumps this on Palestinian land at the Tovlan landfill.
The letter also gave evidence of Veolia’s racist recruitment policies in Israel, as well as the company’s operation of buses on Highway 443 which Palestinians are prohibited from using.
Veolia’s failure to win the WLWA contract is a heavy blow for the company because it owns a domestic waste depot in the area covered by the WLWA and so should have been ideally placed to meet some of the necessary criteria for the WLWA tender.
Worse still for Veolia, this blow comes only six months after it failed to win Ealing Council’s £300m new ‘Clean and Green’ contract even though Veolia already did much of the work under the old contract. When bidding for that contract Veolia had faced determined opposition from Palestinian rights campaigners over its track record in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Campaigners across the world are focussed on Veolia because it is a key target of the global Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (‘BDS’) campaign for Palestinian rights and which is led by Palestinian civil society organisations.
Sarah Colborne, Director of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign in the UK , commented :
‘Complicity in infringing human rights and international law has become an expensive business for Veolia. Other companies please note: There is a strong, determined and popular international campaign for justice for Palestinians; if you aid Israel’s oppression of Palestinians your business will suffer just like Veolia’s‘
French multinational Veolia is known for its involvement in several Israeli colonization projects in the occupied West Bank. In a public relations effort to sell a supposed commitment to peace, the company has lend its name to the Veolia Desert Challenge, an Israeli biking event held in the Naqab on 2 December. This year’s event included a “The Race for Peace”. The organizers were delighted to invite one hundred Palestinians from the West Bank to participate and to “create eye level encounters,” they write on the English page of the website. On the pages in Arabic and Hebrew it is written that this is the first time that Palestinians from the West Bank will participate in the Veolia Desert Challenge. “We believe that Sport is yet another way to bring people together, reconcile and break down barriers. We invite you, Arabs & Jews, to come and enjoy a sporting experience in the great outdoors.”

Bin Hamam and israel’s FA chairman
Israel FA chairman Avi Luzon has declined to throw his public support behind Fifa chief Sepp Blatter.
Seeking a fourth term as president of football’s world governing body, Blatter is being challenged by president of the Asian Football Confederation Mohammed Bin Hammam of Qatar. Israel’s FA is one of 208 member associations who will choose between Blatter and Bin Hammam on June 1.
Luzon said: “I met Bin Hammam for the first time at the Uefa Congress in Paris in March. We shook hands and he seemed very pleasant but it was not a meeting in the sense that I had a chance to sit down and talk to him about his vision for world soccer.
“If Bin Hammam wins there is no reason why we cannot work with him.”
Luzon said that he preferred not to talk to the media about the elections. He added: “We certainly welcome Fifa’s decision to hold the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar and we hope that Israel will qualify.
“Qatar is committed to allowing all member associations, including Israel, to play there.”
Qatar had low level diplomatic trade relations with Israel that were broken off in 2009 following the Gaza war.

Star-Studded lineup for Qatar Ladies Open
14 Jan 2011
Qatar Tennis Federation (QTF) is set to organize the ninth edition of Qatar Ladies Open at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex from 21-26, February 2011.
This year’s edition is expected to be the most exciting since the tournament started in 2001, as it will feature twenty out of the top thirty ranked players in WTA rankings.
Among the confirmed participants are world number one Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark) and world number two Vera Zvonareva (Russia), in addition to four former world number one players, Maria Sharapova (Russia), Justine Henin (Belgium), Jelena Jankovic (Serbia) and Ana Ivanovic (Serbia).
Wozniacki had a remarkable 2010 season where she clinched six titles to lead the WTA Ranking. The
Danish superstar is aiming to secure her first title in Doha after losing in the final of 2010 WTA Championships to Belgian Kim Clijsters 3–6, 7–5, 3–6 in September.
World number two Vera Zvonareva will be facing huge pressure this season to keep her highest ever position in the WTA rankings, a win in Qatar Ladies Open will be a plus, specially that she only won one WTA title last year and lost five finals including Wimbledon and US Open.
For former world Number one Sharapova, winning the title in Doha will be a major step in reviving her career. The three-time grand slam winner suffered a shoulder injury in 2008 while she was the world number one.
She was out for nearly a year and dropped out of the top 100 ranked players. Since her return in 2009 she was able to win three WTA titles and was back to the top 20. The Russian beauty won the title twice in Doha 2005 and 2008.
Belgian legend Henin, won 43 WTA singles titles including seven Grand Slam singles and also led the WTA Standings before retiring in 2008 to spend more time with her family.
Henin made a successful return to the WTA stage in early 2010, losing the the Australian Open final against American Serena Williams. The 28-years-old lifted the Qatar ladies Open trophy in 2007 after defeating Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final.
Other notable names in Qatar ladies Open this year include Italian Francesca Schiavone who won Roland Garros title last year, and promising young star Victoria Azarenka of Belarus who secured three WTA hard-court titles over the last two years (Cincinnati – Memphis – Indiana Wells).
“The participation of these stars in the 2011 Qatar ladies Open is not a surprise for us, it’s the result of our fruitful efforts over the last two decades to organize top class tennis events” said QTF President Mr. Nasser Bin Ghanem Al Khelaifi.
“World’s top players prefer events in Doha; most of them came here before and enjoyed professional organizing, nice weather and fantastic crowds. All this helps them to give their best on the court, while we do our best to organize a successful event” he added.
Tournament Director Mr. Karim Alami expected huge demand for Qatar Ladies Open tickets this year.
“Tennis became a very popular sport in Qatar, year after year we see more crowds coming to the events organized by QTF. During the 2011 ATP Qatar ExxonMobil Open Final, the stands were full at the main court despite the fact that world number one Rafael Nadal was knocked out from the semi- finals” he said.
“With the star-studded lineup of the event this year we expect large numbers of spectators from the first days of the tournament” he added.
The tickets for the 2011 Qatar Ladies can be purchased through the official website of Qatar Tennis Federation http://www.qatartennis.org.
From the 21st of January, tickets will be available in Villaggio and Landmark shopping centers as well as Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
