AUSTIN, Texas, May 10 (UPI) — Israel may be looking to Qatar to allay energy concerns related to ongoing issues with Egyptian natural gas deals, an analysis suggests.

Qatar apparently offered Israel a deal to sell it liquefied natural gas at a ministerial meeting last weekend in London, Texas intelligence company Stratfor reports.

Israel is concerned about the future of its natural gas deal with Egypt, which supplies its northern neighbor with a significant amount of gas under a 2005 deal.

That deal is controversial, however, as it is alleged that former Egyptian officials were getting personal benefits from the Israeli gas deal. Egyptian deliveries are also the target of insurgent attacks that can disrupt Israeli supplies.

Israel is keen to develop its giant offshore Tamar and Leviathan gas fields, though development is years way. Qatar, meanwhile, is the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas in the world and Israel said in February it was building a floating LNG platform off the coast of Hadera.

Stratfor said, however, that even though Qatari deliveries bring more security to Israel, “in the near term Israel will have little choice but to accede to Cairo’s demands on changes to the natural gas deal.”
